Description of Tryout Process

The Millikan High School Cheer Squads are recognized as a sports activity. Today’s cheerleader is an athlete with special talents, which include gymnastics and dance. All members of the cheer squads compete in local, regional and national competitions, as well as performing the duties of crowd leading at a wide variety of sports events. Recognized around the nation as one of the leading cheer programs, they set an example for others in their school spirit, their leadership, and commitment to their studies.

Thank you for your interest in Millikan cheer! Please see the information below for the 2012-2013 Season. Tryout Packets will be available soon! Please check the website regularly as information will posted as it is available.

We are so excited that you are interested in cheerleading. Below are some things to consider as you make your choice for a high school cheer program.

I am proud to say Millikan cheer is one of the strongest programs in Moore League, even more we are recognized around the nation as one of the leading cheer programs! We are excited that you are interested in becoming a part of our team. We are looking forward to our upcoming tryout in April in which we will be selecting the new members for our squads.

To become a Millikan Cheerleader or Mascot you must first go through the tryout process. We will be holding a parent information meeting March 22nd 6:30pm in the cafeteria. You will be judged on the material that will be taught at the tryouts April 16th-20th 3pm-5pm, (freshmen arrive as soon as you get out of class, don't worry about coming late, our senior cheerleaders will stay until 5:30pm for additional help and to catch up 8th graders!). At the cheer tryouts you will learn a cheer, dance, stunts, be tested on the mile run and gymnastics skills. Mascots will take a basic mascot course and create a skit for tryouts. You will be judged on these skills on Friday April 20th 3:30-7pm.
Please contact me if you have any questions about tryouts, and look for more information to be announced at your Middle school this spring!

Here are some suggestions to build or improve your skills before cheer tryouts:
1. Attend Millikan's cheer clinic for youth (ages 5-middle school). It's a great way to learn basic cheer skills, meet our cheer coaches, cheerleaders and perform at a varsity basketball game- see what it's like to be a Millikan cheerleader!

2. To improve gymnastic skills start tumbling classes at a local gym. We highly recommend Kidnastics in Los Alamitos, (562) 431-1102. It also helps to take private lessons, that way you can get a little more one on one attention. http://kidnastics.net/ or American Gymnastics Academy in Signal Hill http://www.american-gymnastics.com/ or SCATS in Huntington Beach http://scatsgymnastics.com/ or Spirit Gymnastics in Santa Fe Springs http://spiritgymnastics.info/contact.html

3. Join an all-star cheer program or participate in your middle school cheer program. These teams are a great way to begin building your skills in stunting, jumps, motions, dances, performance skills etc. etc. Local all-star programs like, HSC, FIERCE, PACE ELITE, STEALTH, etc.

4. Enroll in a dance class at a local studio. There are several great dance studios in this area, and most studios offer the first lesson free. We suggest Melodies in Los Alamitos, or Center Stage here in Long Beach.
